Dear Mr. Wall:
I am writing to thank the California Natural Resources Agency for its thorough study of California Wild and Scenic River suitability for the Mokelumne River between Salt Springs Dam and Pardee Reservoir. I strongly support the study’s recommendation to include those 37 miles of the North Fork and main Mokelumne in the California Wild and Scenic River system.
The Mokelumne's wildlife values are also exceptional. It's home to a number of special status species, potential spawning habitat for fall-run Chinook salmon, and included in a state-defined critical wildlife habitat block. I believe the final study should add wildlife to recreation and scenic values as an extraordinary value of the Mokelumne. Its remote canyons will be especially important as wildlife habitat and corridors in the future.
I was pleased to see that the study concludes that local water demands can be met while we also protect this very special river. It was also good to see the California Research Bureau's analysis of how Wild and Scenic designation has had little effect on water rights applications and water project.
It is very clear that we can have our river and water, too -- the best of all possible outcomes.
Thank you for this opportunity to comment. Please let me know when the study is final.
