Ione Valley Land, Air, and Water Defense Alliance
On February 26, 2019, the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento ruled against the Ione Valley Land and Water Defense Alliance (LAWDA) in its appeal of an Amador Superior Court ruling that allowed the owners of the Newman Ridge property outside Ione to proceed with an open pit mine and nearby hot asphalt plant. This is the latest, and apparently the last, legal decision in a conflict that began with the 2012 approval of the project
The mine and hot asphalt plant were controversial due to the potential impacts on water, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, traffic, and neighboring ranches and homes. LAWDA, made up primarily of local residents, led the difficult fight against the mine and asphalt plant. Foothill Conservancy was also opposed to the project.
While this decision is a victory for the mine proponents, it may be a while before it begins operations since the proponents must still obtain a number of permits from local and state regulatory agencies. For more information, see Ione LAWDA’s website .
