Annual Mokelumne River Cleanup a success
Carolyn Schooley
Student Emily Iley helped with this year's Mokelumne River Cleanup.
Volunteers joined forces to clean along the Electra Road and Big Bar sections of the Mokelumne River on Saturday, September 16 in the annual Mokelumne River Cleanup. They removed about 415 pounds of trash and recyclables in less than three hours, making our local recreation sites healthier for people, fish and wildlife.

Some of this year’s most unusual finds included a vintage Sony Watchman TV, a Michael Jackson sequined glove, a 36” flat screen TV and a pair of Air Jordan tennis shoes.

Foothill Conservancy’s annual Mokelumne River Cleanups have been held for more than 26 years. In recent years, they have been held in conjunction with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy-sponsored Great Sierra River Cleanup. The East Bay Municipal Utility District sponsored cleanup sites downstream of us, at Middle Bar and around their Mokelumne reservoirs.

We would like to thank all our participants for their efforts, Carolyn Schooley of our staff for organizing the event, and our generous business sponsors: ACES Waste Services, Martell Safeway, Munnerlyn’s Ice Creamery, and New York Fitness.
