Rafters run the Chute rapid on the Mokelumne Electra Run.
Last June and July, OARS of Angels Camp sponsored two benefit raft trips for us on the Mokelumne River’s Electra-Middle Bar reach. More than 140 rafters were introduced to the beauty of the Mokelumne, where commercial rafting is not currently allowed.
Rafters ranged in age from 8 to more than 80, and everyone had a wonderful time!
We’d like to thank OARS for their generous donation of the rafting trips to our organization, and everyone who took part. The trips raised nearly $10,000 for our work to protect and restore the Mokelumne River.
OARS is seeking to run limited commercial trips on the Electra-Middle Bar reach. That effort is supported by tourism and economic development entities in Calaveras County, but has met with some opposition from at least a few Amador County supervisors and the East Bay Municipal Utility District staff.
If you support adding limited commercial rafting to our local recreation tourism mix, please let your local elected officials know. It’s a way to bring more recreation tourism dollars into our local economy and lengthen the stay of people who have come here for other reasons. Nearly everyone on our benefit raft trips spent money in local businesses before or after their trip.
