Jackson Hills Project

Jackson Hills is a proposal for a 540-house suburban-style golf course subdivision on French Bar Road on the edge of Jackson. The Jackson City Council approved the project in September.

Local residents, the Concerned Citizens of Jackson, recently gathered more than 700 signatures for referendums that could reverse the council's decision. After the signatures were verified, the city council had the option to reverse its approval of the project or put the matter before the voters. The council chose the latter option, which means that Jackson voters will decide on the measures in June 2008.

Ken Berry and the Friends of Jackson have also filed a lawsuit to stop the project.

The latest news: On Monday, March 10, the Jackson City Council rescinded its earlier resolutions approving the EIR and general plan change for Jackson Hills. The citizens' vote will not take place.

Community concerns include
  • Conversion of agricultural land and open space
  • Population growth
  • Traffic increases and resulting traffic congestion
  • Use of fresh water for golf course irrigation
  • Demands on public services
  • Degradation of visual resources
  • Increased air pollution
  • Loss of oak woodlands and oak trees
  • Loss of wildlife habitat
  • Harm to cultural resources
  • Lack of workforce housing

Environmental reviews have concluded that alternatives to the project have fewer impacts.
